At least 27 million people have been registered to vote so far, with the numbers expected to increase over the weekend.
The commission said lease agreements had been signed for the venues that would be used for the weekend.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said there were also temporary voting stations that would be available in areas that did not have infrastructure that could be used.
"The majority of temporary voting stations are found in Gauteng, followed by Free State, and Limpopo."
Mamabolo encouraged all South Africans who were eligible to vote to register over the weekend if they had not done so already.
