JOHANNESBURG - The Multi-party Charter for South Africa believes it has a good chance of grabbing swing provinces like KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng from the African National Congress (ANC)'s grasp.
In the last general elections, the ANC won both provinces by a narrow margin.
On Thursday, leaders from the eleven political parties under the charter are hosting a voter registration drive campaign at the Johannesburg City Hall.
With the elections fast approaching, there are still about 14 million eligible people not registered to vote.
The Multi-party Charter event is aimed at unlocking that base.
Freedom Front Plus CEO, Pieter de Necker, said that recent political events, like Jacob Zuma’s defection from the ANC, would be an advantage to the charter.
"People are sick and tired of what is happening and there's definitely the possibility of us as the Multi-party Charter to be able to take over, especially in a number of the provinces - Gauteng, KZN and then of course the Western Cape."
De Necker said South Africa was ready for a new government after 30 years of ANC rule.
