DURBAN - ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal said the eThekwini Municipality was headed for disaster after Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda survived another motion of no confidence.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) tabled a motion that the mayor be removed, saying residents were faced with hardship under Kaunda's leadership.
However, on Wednesday, Kaunda survived with 109 votes against 98 in the council.
ActionSA expressed dismay at those who supported the mayor and his party, the African National Congress (ANC).
In what was the first meeting of the eThekwini full council on Wednesday, Kaunda's position was at risk, with parties, including the IFP and the Democratic Alliance (DA), wanting to remove him through a motion of confidence.
However, smaller parties in the council disagreed with the motion and voted that Kaunda kept power.
ActionSA KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Sanelisiwe Zuma: "It is disheartening that some smaller political parties made the decision to abstain from voting or voted against the motion to remove Kaunda, who has, on numerous occasions, displayed that he is unfit to perform the duties of his office.”
The party believes that the move to keep Kaunda was unfair to various eThekwini communities in need of services.
