JOHANNESBURG - The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has urged hostel dwellers to vote out the governing African National Congress (ANC) saying it left them living in squalor.

The IFP’s national leadership made its way to Johannesburg on Thursday to visit several hostels across the city.

The party said it is shocked by the state of hostels and the subsequent poor living conditions of residents.

A burst municipal pipe on the side of the road remains the only source of water for residents of the Jeppe men’s hostel.

Long-time resident Siyabonga Nkosi said it is not unusual for them to go long periods without water.

"The problem here is we are being ignored. It takes a very long time for things to be fixed. As you can see there is no water in this block and that’s been going on for four years.”

IFP president, Velenkosini Hlabisa said hostel residents should punish the ANC government at the polls.

Hlabisa also urged the residents to register to vote here in Johannesburg, since a majority of them are economic migrants from other parts of the country.
