DURBAN - President Cyril Ramphosa has expressed satisfaction with the completion of some bridges in KwaZulu-Natal built under the Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme.
Eleven out of 22 bridges are now complete in the province.
Ramaphosa conducted an oversight visit to rural Mkhambathini, west of the province on Wednesday.
Umkhambathini is situated in deep rural KwaZulu-Natal just outside the capital city Pietermaritzburg.
The area is battling rampant unemployment and high poverty levels.
The Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme has managed to complete a few bridges for ease of movement by the community – a development that Ramaphosa is excited about.
“It is for them that we are doing this, and to see the joy on their faces. And the smiles on their faces is precisely what any president would like to see. So I am happy!”
The Department of Public Works said over 50 bridges are under construction in parts of the country this year.
