Overstrand fires continue to rage amid 'unpredictable winds', says mayor
Overstrand Mayor Annelie Rabie says as a precautionary measure, residents living between Porter Drive and Delport Road in Betty's Bay have been urged to evacuate their homes.
CAPE TOWN - At least 120 firefighters are still battling raging fires in the Overstrand area, where five properties have already been razed to the ground.
The blaze between Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay in Hangklip has been burning since Monday.
Overstrand Mayor Annelie Rabie says as a precautionary measure, residents living between Porter Drive and Delport Road in Betty's Bay have been urged to evacuate their homes.
“I have just visited the Hangklip Hotel area, we still have 120 men and women on foot in this area. It will remain like that for the next two days.”
Rabie says the wind in the area is still causing havoc and hampering efforts to control the fires.
“The wind is still very unpredictable, and we do not at this time have an indication that we will be completely out of the woods within the next 48 hours.”
