DURBAN - Ethekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has once again survived a motion that sought to remove him as mayor of the KwaZulu-Natal metro municipality.
The Inkatha Freedom Party tabled to motion to have him voted out – saying the party has faced a lot of disgrace under his leadership.
Ethekwini has faced various service delivery issues – including the lack of water for communities, especially in the north of Durban.
The sewage spillage at the city’s beaches has also been a matter that has been a burden on Kaunda’s leadership.
Wednesday’s motion was based on what the party has labelled a lack of leadership from Kaunda.
However, the bid failed with the support of the smaller parties in the council.
The Economic Freedom Fighters who have a working relationship with the African National Congress in the metro also voted against the party - saying that they are not in coalition with them.
They claim they will only vote for them only where they agree with them.
Action SA leader Zwakele Mncwango lashed out at smaller parties who voted against Kaunda’s removal – describing their actions as disheartening.
This is the second motion of no confidence that Kaunda survives – after he survived another one in February 2023.
