'Jacob Zuma' is trending after the ANC decided to suspend him from the party.

Near the end of last year, the former president announced he would no longer vote for the ANC, instead becoming the face of the newly formed uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party.

More than a month later, the ANC has decided to suspend Zuma as a member.

In a press briefing, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that Zuma’s conduct is ‘irreconcilable’ with the constitution of the party, and they must put in place measures to protect their integrity.

Zuma has reportedly been a concern for certain members of the ANC as far back as 1997, says Friedman.

“Certain people in the ANC were worried about his dangerous combination of unhealthy ambition and poor judgement [according to Mark Gevisser].”

The ANC decided to suspend Zuma, instead of expelling him, as there is a rule in its constitution which allows them to do so immediately without giving him a chance to respond.
