JOHANNESBURG - The Rand Water executive killed in a suspected hit has been identified as Teboho Joala, the entity's chief shared services officer.

Joala was shot and killed in full view of over 70 primary school pupuls at the Zakariyya Park Community Hall, south of Johannesburg on Monday.

His bodyguard was also killed in the shooting.

City of Joburg African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Sthembiso Zungu also sustained two gunshot wounds after being caught in the crossfire.

Rand Water had been hosting a back-to-school campaign, handing out shoes and uniforms to pupils from six schools in the area.

Eyewitness News understands one of the gunmen was seated among the audience before producing a firearm and shooting Joala eight times.

Another gunman shot and killed Joala’s bodyguard outside the venue before they fled the scene in a white vehicle.

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi: "It is reported that an unknown number of suspects entered the hall where there was a donation function and started shooting before fleeing the scene with an unknown white vehicle."

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo said the incident occurred shortly after 9am.

"As an organisation, we are shocked and devastated at the tragic passing of our treasured colleague."

Gauteng Education Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said that fortunately no learners or staff were injured.

"The MEC has dispatched psychosocial support to all affected schools to provide necessary trauma counselling to all those affected."

Joala joined Rand Water in 2019 and was a member of the executive committee.
