JOHANNESBURG - The Road Accident Fund (RAF) welcomed a 10-year jail sentence handed down to a KwaZulu-Natal lawyer who stole R2.3 million that was meant to benefit his clients.
Last week, the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Langelihle Dube for swindling funds from the RAF between 2009 and 2011.
In the first case, R1.4 million was paid into Dube's trust account by RAF and was meant for a young boy who had been seriously injured in a car crash.
The second amount of R900,000 was for an insurance payout on a deceased estate.
"The Road Accident Fund is indeed delighted that the sentencing of Langelihle Dube to ten years in prison for stealing monies that were dispersed by the Road Accident Fund," said the RAF’s McIntosh Polela.
"We do promise the people of South Africa there will be a lot more to make sure that we stop lawyers from turning the Road Accident Fund into a piggy bank."
