JOHANNESBURG - Emergency Management Services (EMS) remain on high alert as the threat of flash floods persists in Gauteng.
Weather forecasters have warned residents to brace themselves for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, damaging winds and hail across the province.
This is expected to lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, roads and bridges.
Forecaster Elizabeth Viljoen: "We're looking at heavy downfalls and large amounts of small hail, we are looking at localised flooding or even flooding of terrestrial areas, even flooding or large amount of hail that can cause damage to infrastructure. That's something we want to keep an eye out for today."
With the rain already battering parts of Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged residents to take the necessary precautions.
"Most roads are wet and slippery and we urge all our motorists to extend the same following distance and try avoid crossing flooded roads and flooded bridges."
Meanwhile, showers and thunderstorms are also expected over KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North-West and the Free State.
