WCED to deploy specialists to under-performing schools after matric results

CAPE TOWN - Education specialists will be deployed to Western Cape schools that did not perform well in the recent matric exams, the provincial education department said on Sunday.

The department said shortcomings in the schooling system may be behind the underperformance in some schools.
Provincial education spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said schools must be held accountable.
"After an analysis of results, we can then determine if issues relates to specific subjects...or a lack of foundational knowledge for example in the senior phase, intermediate phase, meaning going back to the foundation phase, poor school leadership and management and ill-discipline of a cohort can also impact the performance of a particular year," she said.
"There are also factors that are beyond our control. They can affect the class performance, such as community or transport disruption which we saw last year in terms of the taxi strike. Adverse weather conditions, burglary and vandalism, poverty, gangsterism, and violence which can all impact the school environments."
