CAPE TOWN - A Mitchells Plain school is reeling following the death of a grade 1 learner after being knocked over by a private transport vehicle.

The incident happened outside Westpoort Primary after school was dismissed on Thursday.

The Western Cape Education Department said the child allegedly ran over the road.

The Western Cape Education Department's Bronagh Hammond said psychologists have been deployed to the school to assist with counselling.

"We send our condolences to the family, friends and the school community. This is a tragic and sad incident."

The Cape Flats Safety Forum's Lynn Phillips said she was distraught by this tragic incident.

"Taking into account that we had a recent massive incident in Mitchells Plain, also on AZ Berman, of learners that lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident."

In that horror crash in May last year, six children were killed while being transported to school in a bakkie.
