JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) is set to discuss its rogue former president, Jacob Zuma, among other issues, at its meetings on Friday.

The party’s highest decision-making structure is sitting at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg for a series of meetings over the next three days.

On the NEC’s agenda is Zuma, the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, and the party’s election readiness.

Until now, the ANC has largely tried to ignore the topic of Zuma as he crisscrosses the country rallying support for the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.

The ANC’s secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, said the party’s NEC will issue a political statement on what it plans to do with Zuma, who is still a registered member.

“That political statement will also entail the matters you are asking about in relation to the ANC’s constitution and the standing of president Zuma, and today we have arrived at that point.”

Mbalula said the focus of the ANC would be on consolidating its structures in preparation for the upcoming general elections.
