JOHANNESBURG - Community members in Tembisa are divided over the brutal murder of six alleged criminals accused of terrorising residents in the community.

Early on Monday morning, the group of men were rounded up, severely assaulted and stoned to death after they were accused of carrying out violent crimes in the Rabie Ridge area.

While two suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates Court for their alleged involvement in the mob attack, community members told Eyewitness News they have lost confidence in the justice system.

A large group of community members gathered to support the two suspects, one holding a placard with the words “Tsotsis must fall”, and insisting the arrested suspects are innocent.

Others are, however, divided.

A resident who witnessed Monday’s attack said he doesn’t know for sure if the men who were killed were responsible for the crimes. The resident said the harrowing scene and the piercing screams from the men who were beaten and burnt alive will forever haunt her.

Another resident, who is a pastor, said the attack was not a common thing in his community.

The suspects are expected to face charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
