Gauteng road fatality stats ‘fairly acceptable’ given population size – Transport MEC
While the country recorded an almost 1% decrease of road fatalities the during 2023 festive season when compared to the same period in 2022, Gauteng saw an increase of 7.6%.

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said the latest road fatalities recorded in the province are statistically okay, given the size of the population.
More people lost their lives over the 2023 festive season, compared with the same period in 2022.
On Wednesday, the MEC joined Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga to provide an update on 2023’s road statistics, which have seen a national decrease of almost 1% from 2022.

Gauteng made it to the list of provinces that saw increases in road fatalities over the 2023 festive period, recording a 7.6% increase.
Though the MEC strongly condemned the road fatalities, she said given the population in the province the number of fatalities was ‘fairly acceptable’.
At the same time, Diale-Tlabedi said the province would intensify its road safety campaigns in 2024, adding that they would reach all the targets set by the national government for the country's roads.
