TSHWANE - Learning continued as normal at Laerskool Queenswood in Pretoria on Thursday despite a dark cloud hanging over the school.
Last Saturday, 12-year-old Latoya Temilton drowned during a leadership camp, organised to induct prefects at the school.
While earlier this week, the school sent out a message acknowledging Temilton’s death and plans of a memorial service, which took place on Wednesday, some parents allege the school has asked them remain tight-lipped on the tragic incident.
The alleged move has sparked outrage among some parents, who bemoaned the school for what they called poor communication on the matter.
Despite limited communication by the Gauteng Education Department and provincial police detailing plans to investigate Temilton's death, the school's principal and SGB are yet to comment.
However, this has not deterred some parents who voiced their frustrations to Eyewitness News, calling for urgent interventions to prevent a tragedy of this nature in future.
"Government must make a call to all the schools, public and private that no water-related activities on the school camps, irrespective of age and irrespective of whether the kid can swim or not, no kid must go near a swimming pool or near water feature in those facilities that they use."
Temilton will be laid to rest this weekend at her home province in Mpumalanga.
Her family has been unavailable at this time for comment.
