JOHANNESBURG - Some Marshalltown fire victims who've been moved to temporary shelters in Denver say they're living in fear after the shelters were allegedly raided by hostel dwellers.

The victims have told Eyewitness News that armed residents from the Denver men's hostel in Johannesburg have threatened to kick them out.

They've been temporarily placed at an area where the city has built dozens of corrugated iron structures after they were displaced in the building fire that killed more than 70 people last year.

While the City of Joburg says its aware that survivors of the Marshalltown fire are being threatened by residents from the Denver men's hostel, one survivor says she sleeps with one eye open, fearing her home will be raided.

"Some lady was crying yesterday, she begged the hostel dwellers to leave her alone. I heard her cry all night long, I was afraid."

Another survivor recalled a group of masked and armed men recently raiding her neighbour's shelter.

"We don't feel safe. There are always gunshots here and we have no electricity. Zama zamas also linger around our shelters."

The city has urged the survivors to report this matter to the police, labelling it an unlawful activity.
