Deadly Joburg CBD building fire: Alleged initiator to appear in court
The lives of the displaced residents are now hanging in the balance as the City of Joburg tries to find a temporary solution.
JOHANNESBURG - The woman accused of setting a Johannesburg building on fire where two people died will appear in Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old is alleged to have started the blaze during a heated argument with her lover at the hijacked two-story express building yesterday.
At least five people have been injured following the massive blaze.
City of Johannesburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane says the police are handling the investigation.
“So, the matter now is a police matter that is being investigated. However, from our side, we are trying as much as possible because, in our books currently, with the Group Forensic Investigation Service, we are investigating about 188 hijacked buildings.”

Meanwhile, the residents have pleaded with city officials to prioritise the allocation of decent accommodation.
While the city is scrambling to find temporary accommodation for victims, the frustrated residents have refused to settle for a community hall.

Though a bus arrived to take the residents to a new location – they claim there was no communication by the city officials about where they were being taken.
Tempers briefly flared when the residents refused to be moved to an undisclosed location.
A resident, Kagiso Sesana, says he wants to be housed in a place where they will have privacy.
He said he feared relocation to a temporary shelter would see the City of Johannesburg abandoning them.
