JOHANNESBURG - The man accused of the rape and murder of Delta Park High School teacher Kirsten Kluyts will on Friday morning appeal the decision of his bail denial.

The 21-year-old Varsity College was denied bail in the Alexandra Magistrates Court in December.

In handing down the bail judgment, the magistrate said she viewed the accused as a danger to society, especially to the women in the community.

Eyewitness News has chosen not to name the accused, in respect of the Sexual Offences Act, which states an accused facing a charge of rape cannot be identified within the public domain until they plead.

A guilty or not-guilty plea is usually heard at a trial stage.

Kluyts was killed in October 2023 during a MyRun event in Sandton, and her body was discovered at George Lea Park in same month.

According to the autopsy report, the 34-year-old was four weeks pregnant at the time of her murder.
