MAHIKENG - Alleged insurance killer Segomotsi Setshwantsho has been denied bail by the Mmabatho Magistrates Court in the North West.
Lawyers for the 49-year-old have spent weeks in court arguing that she is eligible for bail.
But the court on Friday found that she failed to prove exceptional circumstances that warrant her release.
Setshwantsho is accused of giving her niece a poisoned sandwich that led to her death, for which she would cash in a R3 million insurance payout.
The courtroom erupted in joy and jubilation when Setshwantsho was denied bail.
Family and members of the community cheered when the investigating officer in this matter, Sergeant Keshi Mabunda, made his way through the courtroom.
As Magistrate Duane Spandiel made his judgement, a blank-faced Setshwantsho stared right ahead.
“This court is satisfied that the accused is not a suitable candidate to be rewarded bail, the bail is accordingly refused.”
The matter has been postponed to 28 March for the State to complete its investigations.
