CAPE TOWN - A taxi driver has been arrested for alleged drunk driving and overloading his scholar transport vehicle during a transport safety operation in Mitchells Plain.
Traffic police were deployed to the area to inspect transport operators.
Several private vehicles transporting children to school were also impounded for not having operating licences.
In May 2023, six children died in a car crash when a bakkie transporting them to school rolled multiple times and hit a traffic light along AZ Berman Drive.
A 55-year-old man was arrested for culpable homicide and his case continues in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie said driver recklessness would not be tolerated.
“Sadly, what we found this morning already, a driver has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. So, our officers are taking those kids to nine different schools,” he said on Thursday.
He said the enforcement operations would continue throughout 2024 to ensure the safety of school children.
