Relebogile Mabotja speaks to Jacob Moshokoa, EWN reporter and Motoring Enthusiast.

Listen to the interview in the audio below.

When buying a car, you want something that suits your budget and your lifestyle, which means finding something that balances reliability and costs.

Value-for-money is essential in an asset like a car, which you will likely have for five years or more.

For something that is affordable for most budgets, Moshokoa recommends something like a Hyundai Getz, Toyota Tazz, VW City Golf.

“Those are the cars that are top of mind as cheapies under R100 000.”

He adds that getting a second-hand cheap car can be a much better option when you are starting out compared to buying new.

If you want a new car, you will have to pay slightly more but there are still some great options.

The Suzuki Swift is a popular affordable choice, starting at R199 000, and has plenty of features such as parking sensors, fog lamps, and electrically adjustable mirrors.

Another option from Suzuki is the S-Presso which is one of the most affordable cars in South Africa.

Starting at R158 800, it is compact and perfect for city driving.

If you want something slightly more luxurious but not too expensive, second hand could be the way to go.

For example, you could get a 2016 Audi A3 Sportback for around R190 000.

However, when it comes to getting a budget friendly car it is not only about the car you choose but also the payment method.

“You have to be very realistic about what you can afford.”

Moshokoa says that it is best to put down a deposit and know if this is a car you want for a short space of time or for several years.
