Montjane secures a spot in French Riviera Open quarter-finals

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s wheelchair tennis player Kgothatso "KG" Montjane has secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the French Riviera Open.
The fourth of the scheduled ITF Super Series events on the 2023 UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, the French Riviera Open is one of the biggest wheelchair tournaments outside of the four Grand Slams: Australian Open, Wimbledon, Roland Garros and US Open.
Africa's top wheelchair tennis player Montjane took down France's Charlotte Fairbank 6-0, 6-1.
Montjane is now set to face the world No.1 and French Riviera Open reigning champion, Diede de Groot from the Netherlands.
De Groot and Montjane have faced each other 27 times, with the former leading the head-to-head series 25-2.
The Netherlands player won the women’s single’s title at Roland Garros for the third time last Saturday.
In 2021 and 2022, the World No. 1 became the first tennis player in any discipline to achieve the calendar-year Grand Slam by winning all four majors in the season, for two successive years.
She then extended her streak to nine Grand Slams with her victory at this season's Australian Open. Montjane her Japanese doubles partner Yui Kamijin defeated De Groot and Maria Florencia Moreno 6-3, 6-2 in the double's finals at Roland Garros.
In May, Montjane bagged both the singles and doubles titles at the ITF 2 Series held in Spain.
Earlier in the year, along with her doubles partner Kamijin, they secured the doubles title at the Japan Open tournament, taking down Jiske Griffioen and Momoko Ohtani.
