Gwamanda to outline plans for Joburg in State of the City Address
Exactly a month since his election, Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda will deliver his maiden State of the City Address at the city council on Tuesday morning.
JOHANNESBURG - Exactly a month since his election, Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda will deliver his maiden State of the City Address at the city council on Tuesday morning.
This comes as the city has been facing a service delivery crisis, poor financial management and disputes between political parties in the past year.
Gwamanda is expected to outline what his administration will do to address these issues and highlight the city’s plans for the next year.
On Monday, council Speaker Colleen Makhubele held a media briefing in Johannesburg, outlining the expectations of the address.
During last year’s State of the City Address, the previous administration in the City of Gold prioritised the stabilising of electricity supply and fixing road infrastructure.
With the administration having been booted out of power, it was unable to complete some of the plans outlined by then-mayor, Mpho Phalatse, during her State of the City Address.
But Makhubele said that Gwamanda would have to outline a comprehensive strategy to address preserve the city’s status.
"Joburg is the economic hub for Africa, it’s an international hub for trade and innovation and it provides a strategic gateway to the continent and to the rest of the world."
She said that Gwamanda had proved to be a capable leader to steer the city in the right direction.
