SA's crime situation benefited from alcohol sales ban, says Cele
The Police Minister Bheki Cele released the latest available crime statistics for offences committed from April to June this year.
PRETORIA - Police Minister Bheki Cele said that almost 300,000 people had been charged with contraventions of the Disaster Management Act since it came into effect in March.
The minister is releasing the latest available crime statistics for offences committed from April to June this year.
The period covers a time when South Africa was placed under levels 5, 4 and 3 of the lockdown.
Several factors are believed to have contributed to fewer contact crimes during this time, including the controversial alcohol sales ban.
Cele also took the time to address the contentious issue.
"I must emphasise the point that the banning of alcohol has nothing to do with crime. It had all to do with the health system and COVID-19 and giving the space to the victims of COVID-19 but, by the way, the crime situation benefited out of that."
