JOHANNESBURG - An Absa bank official accused of looting over R25 million from the Limpopo government has been remanded in custody.

Fhatuwani Mudzanani appeared in court on Monday. The clerk was arrested on Friday.

It’s alleged that he stole the money from the provincial government and deposited it into different accounts linked to him.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Matimba Maluleke said: “Mudzanani was remanded in custody until 27 of July for a formal bail application, and police investigations are ongoing.”

In a statement sent to Eyewitness News on Tuesday morning, Absa said the money was recovered.

"We can confirm that a suspect was arrested for alleged fraud of R25 million in Elim, Limpopo and appeared in court [on Monday]. Our forensics team immediately flagged the transactions and placed a hold on the accounts - no money was lost. We will continue to work with all authorities involved," said Oscar Siziba, Absa managing executive for regional coverage in Gauteng and Limpopo.
