JOHANNESBURG - Lesotho Prime Minister Tom Thabane has issued a stern warning against a planned announcement of what he said was an unconstitutional change of government.

MPs of Thabane’s All Basotho Convention party said they had partnered with the main opposition Democratic Congress to form a new coalition.

In a brief statement, Thabane said that he was disappointed that his MPs were allowing their party to be infiltrated.

Prime Minister Tom Thabane has declared a lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

He suspended parliament a few days earlier, citing COVID-19 prevention but his MPs went to court to challenge it and the high court is expected to make its ruling on Friday.

Those MPs said they’d agreed with the opposition to reconfigure the kingdom’s governing coalition and they would announce the details later on today.

Thabane called the MPs power-hungry and accused them of undermining the country’s efforts to fight the pandemic.

He said he was surprised they were going ahead even though he said he would step down.
