UCT’s Neuroscience Institute delving into causes of neurological diseases

Through international collaborations, a team is analysing the genetics underlying mental illness. Another group of scientists is tasked with understanding the link between genetics and neuromuscular diseases.

CAPE TOWN – The University of Cape Town (UCT)’s Neuroscience Institute is unlocking secrets hidden in the genetic building blocks of neurological diseases.

A number of disciplines, including neurology, psychiatry, and imaging formed part of the initiative.

Through international collaborations, a team is analysing the genetics underlying mental illness. Another group of scientists is tasked with understanding the link between genetics and neuromuscular diseases.

Neurology Professor at Groote Schuur Hospital, Jeannine Heckmann, is investigating.

“The degenerative condition called Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neurone disease and particularly how these impact Africans and what are the specific problems related to those conditions within African populations,” she said.
