JOHANNESBURG - Police have reiterated that the public does not need to wait for 24 hours to report a missing person in the wake of Laticia Jansen's murder.
The 15-year-old Graceland Education Centre pupil was stabbed and burnt to death in Elsburg on the East Rand last week.
Her grandmother said she was turned away by police and told to return after 24 hours when she reported the child missing on Wednesday.
The police's Vishnu Naidoo said: "If a person reasonably believes that a close family member, relative, friend, a colleague is missing, it doesn’t matter may or could be, then they can go to the police station and report the person missing immediately."
Police have now opened a murder case.
