FAKE NEWS ALERT: Home Affairs is not discontinuing the green ID book

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans who are still using the old green barcoded ID books can continue using it as a post announcing that the Department of Home Affairs is discontinuing it is false.

A post of a sign allegedly put up at a Home Affairs branch in Upington announced that green ID books would be discontinued from 1 April 2020 and citizens have to replace them with Smart ID cards.

This has caused a stir on social media, with some ID book holders worrying that they'll be forced to convert before the deadline.

However, Home Affairs has debunked the hoax.
