How to make long weekends even longer in 2020

Public holidays are not counted as leave, and we show you how to use them strategically in 2020 to make long weekends even longer.

JOHANNESBURG – Good news! You can go back on holiday! Okay no, not really…

However, the good news is that South Africa has 12 public holidays in 2020 and there are ways to make the most of them.

Public holidays are not counted as leave, and many people use them strategically to make long weekends even longer.

Here are our suggestions:

1 January (New Year’s Day)
Okay, this one is already gone. Perhaps many spent it resting from New Year’s Eve celebrations?

21 March (Human Rights Day)
The day commemorates the Sharpeville massacre in which 69 people were gunned down by the apartheid police for protesting pass laws. People often commemorate the day by attending rallies from various political parties or visiting Sharpeville.

Unfortunately, this year the day falls on a Saturday, so no chance of a long weekend.

10 April (Good Friday) and 13 April (Family Day)
This year the Easter holidays fall on 10 and 13 April and if you're smart (and first in the leave queue...) you could bag 7 days out of the office between 9 and 15 April by only taking 3 days of leave.

27 April (Freedom Day ) and 1 May (Workers' Day)
But wait... there's more vacay days to be had in April! Beach holiday anyone? Take leave on Friday 24 April, then light up the weekend, wake up on Monday and guess what? It’s a holiday! Then take an extra three days off and boom! You fall into Friday, another public holiday! Then it’s the weekend again, the gift that keeps on giving. This gives you 10 days off for only 4 leave days.

16 June (Youth Day)
This public holiday falls on a Tuesday so make it a long weekend by taking the Monday off. Noice!

9 August (National Women’s Day)
Vacation mode: Always on! As Women's Day falls on a Sunday this year, the Monday is a public holiday. If you take just 2 days off on either side, then you can get a whole 5 days off!

24 September (Heritage Day)
Let’s go the beach! Or the pool resort! Whatever it is, get those sunglasses, flip flops and umbrellas out. Heritage Day falls on a Thursday, so if you take 2 days off (the Friday and Monday), then you can braai to your stomach's content for 5 straight days.

16 December (Day of Reconciliation)
Seas the moment, seas the day! It's the same story here. The public holiday is on a Wednesday, so take Thursday and Friday off and you get a 5-day long weekend. Please and thank you...

25 December (Christmas Day) and 26 December (Day of Goodwill)
Let the good times roll! Take Thursday 24 December and Monday 28 December off and you will be work-free for 5 days! Let’s Dezemba now!
