[LISTEN] Maimane: 'ANC’s BEE policy produced the Guptas'

| The Democratic Alliance has been vocal about its intention to abolish the current model for black economic empowerment once it comes into power.

JOHANNESBURG - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says the African National Congress’ model of black economic empowerment has failed to benefit most South Africans but instead has disempowered many.

The party has been vocal about its intentions to abolish the programme once it comes into power.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa on Radio702, Maimane says the model has only benefited a few people.

“It’s produced, in many ways, the Guptas. I want a BEE that will benefit all South Africans; a BEE that includes more people. I want more black South Africans, more black students who will be able to benefit.

“While you and I are busy trying to have a debate about whether we should give shares to Gwede Mantashe and his politically connected people, South Africans are being left out.”

Maimane says the DA unreservedly supports the goal of economically empowering black South Africans who are currently left out of the economy, and not just a minority of political families who are reaping the benefits of the current programme.
