[UPDATE] Signal Hill fire spreads to Sea Point area

The City's Fire and Rescue Service responded this afternoon to a fire at the base of Signal Hill.

CAPE TOWN - The fire that started on the slopes of Signal Hill in Cape Town has spread to the slopes above Sea Point.

The fire has been fanned by very strong winds and is now moving closer to The Avenues in Fresnaye

The City's Fire and Rescue Service responded this afternoon to a fire at the base of Signal Hill.

Fire and Rescue's Theo Layne says there is no immediate danger to property and that they are not evacuating for the moment, but they are on standby to do so if the situation changes.

“The fire is being fanned by a very strong south-easterly wind. We are being assisted by Table Mountain National Parks, as well as two contracted helicopters.

Water tankers, fire engines and approximately 18 fire fighting vehicles and over 70 firefighters are on the scene.

"Signal Hill Road remains closed and when the need arises, additional roads will be called in the area."

Meanwhile, the service also responded to a veldfire near De Waal Drive. The burning vegetation has cast a heavy layer of smoke on the surrounding area.
