Immediate evacuation in Franskraal area as Overstrand fires flare up again
The R43 between Stanford and Franskraal has been closed following a flareup of three fire lines earlier on Friday.
CAPE TOWN - An immediate evacuation order has been issued for the Franskraal area in the Overstrand.
The R43 between Stanford and Franskraal has been closed following a flareup of three fire lines earlier on Friday after the fire that ravaged the area since early in the new year, was contained overnight.
Authorities say the fire is spreading fast and the strong winds have caused the fire to flare up again.
Overstrand fire chief Reinhardt Geldenhuys says the focus is on fires near Betty’s Bay.
“On the spreading fire itself, we have winds of about 70 kilometres over our line. That led to a flare-up on our line closest to Betty’s Bay. We have teams on it, and we tried to get aerial resources, but the wind is too strong. The fire is now burning on the mountain. We are pulling resources and to protecting structures, if necessary.”
The municipality issued immediate evacuations at 1pm on Friday.
Acting mayor Elnora Gillion explains: “We have three fires at the moment in Overstrand area. The one is currently in Gaansbaai, also Karwyderskraal and Betty’s Bay.”
Two helicopters and eight fire engines are on the scene.
