JOHANNESBURG - The Spanish Football Association has fired head coach Julen Lopetegui from his position a day before the start of the World Cup in Russia.

Lopetegui was unveiled as the new Real Madrid coach on Tuesday following the shock resignation of Frenchman Zinedine Zidane. The decision was not met well with the Spanish FA and on Wednesday they announbced the sacking of Lopetegui.

The decision ends a two-year period in the job for Lopetegui, whose contract was supposed to run until the end of the 2020 European Championships.

Former player Fernando Hierro is the favorite to take over from Lopetegui in the interim.
