JOHANNESBURG – Eyewitness News has received reports of a protest at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

Some doctors at the facility say that patients have been threatened by protesting staff, who have also barricaded the hospital entrance.

It’s not yet clear what the protest is about but its alleged to be linked to labour issues.

One staff member, who has asked not to be named, says the situation is tense.

"We had a patient who said they were told to leave and not come to hospital. The person who told them this was holding a hammer. Right now they have stopped access for emergency vehicles to the hospital and people coming for their regular clinic visits."

Officials from the Gauteng Health Department have been unavailable for comment.
