JOHANNESBURG - The father of three children who died in a shack fire in Bekkersdal, Westonaria, has described to Eyewitness News how he scrambled to try and save their lives as the blaze ripped through their room.

The children, aged between two and 11, were sleeping when the fire broke out overnight at their home in the Spooktown informal settlement.

An emotional Isaac Makwakwa couldn't hold back his tears as he relived the moments his house went up in flames. He says all he could think of was saving his family.

Makwakwa says he did all he could to reach his children, but the fire was too powerful.

“I tried to hold onto the child. The child slipped out of my hands. I don’t know how I made it out of the house.”

The family lost everything in the blaze and the mother is recovering in hospital after suffering burns to her legs.
