CAPE TOWN - Calm has been restored to Woodlands in Mitchell's Plain following days of violent protests over land and housing.
Several shops were looted, and roads barricaded after authorities removed 20 illegally erected structures in the area on Monday night.
About 150 people took to the streets in protest against the evictions.
The City of Cape Town's Wayne Dyason said: “At least six shops have been severely affected by looting and damage inflicted by protesters to glass doors and windows. Burglar bars have also been ripped from doors and windows of some of the shops. The garage in Eros Way has been so badly vandalised that its been closed for the day.”
