7 suspects to appear in court over Zaaiplaas protests

JOHANNESBURG – Seven suspects are expected to appear in the Groblersdal magistrates court in Limpopo on Monday on charges of arson malicious damage to property and assaulting a police officer.

Two schools in the Zaaiplaas area and a police station were set alight during service delivery protests last week.

A police officer was also injured.

Provincial police commissioner Nneke Ledwaba visited the area at the weekend and deployed additional public order police.

Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe says the community has agreed to call off the protest for now.

β€œIn a meeting attended by various stakeholders, an agreement was reached that will see the cessation of these violent protests that engulfed the area for the past four days.”
