[LISTEN] What to expect from this year’s Budget speech

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba is set to deliver his maiden Budget speech on Wednesday amid speculation that it could also be his last.

Karima Brown talks to Goolam Ballim, Group Chief Economist at Standard Bank and Ettiene Retief, chairperson of the national tax and South African Revenue Service committee at the South African Institute of Professional Accountants.

Ballim says this is going to be the hardest budget speech given the economic and political instability the country has seen over the 2017 period, where credit ratings also played a role in determining the direction the country had taken under Zuma.

But he says this can soon change given renewed optimism under Cyril Ramaphosa and Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba has been given a lifeline to set new targets for the country’s economic recovery.
