HARARE - Zimbabwean authorities are warning residents of a town that’s been hit by cholera not to shake hands at funerals.

Cholera broke out in the town of Chegutu, west of Harare, and now 70 people have been infected with the disease.

Forty more cases have been reported in the last four days.

Health Minister David Parirenyatwa told state radio all 10 provinces have been put on high alert.

In a statement, Parirenyatwa said residents of Chegutu are being urged not to shake hands with each other to avoid spreading the disease.

He also called for funerals in the town to be monitored by health workers, since this outbreak spread at a funeral.

The health ministry is reporting that there have been more than 2,400 cases of typhoid in Zimbabwe since October, another disease that spreads easily where water supply is poor.
