JOHANNESBURG- The Warriors drew first blood in the new edition of the One Day Cup, when they beat the struggling Highveld Lions by six wickets at the Wanderers on Wednesday night.
The Lions batted first and could only manage to post 209 all out, with their innings struggling to gain any momentum under the accurate bowling from the visiting Warriors bowlers.
Reeza Hendricks was the first to go, when he was brilliantly caught at second slip by Captain Jon-Jon Smuts. Smuts moved quickly and low to his left to snap up the catch and send Hendricks on his way.
Sisanda Magala was particularly impressive with figures of 3/28 in eight overs, which also included the wickets of Omphile Ramela and Mangaliso Mosehle.
Dwaine Pretorius was the only Lions batsman that score significant runs, as he finished unbeaten on 77, but no other batsman could stick with the all-rounder. The Lions were eventually bowled out for 209 inside 40 overs.
The Warriors' chase didn’t get off to the greatest of starts, as SA under 19-star batsman Matthew Breetzke tried to uppercut a Pretorius delivery, but couldn’t get enough bat on it to carry it over the third-man boundary, and was well caught by Hardus Viljeon. Colin Ackerman and Gihahn Cloete then combined well for a partnership over 50, but Viljeon struck twice in one over to dismiss Cloete and Yasseen Valie.
Smuts and Jonker then came together to produce a match winning partnership of over 150 runs to seal a bonus point victory for the Warriors. Smuts finished unbeaten on 70 while Jonker was also unbeaten on 55.
