CAPE TOWN - The festive season's festivities will be short-lived for many South Africans who tend to sink further into debt over this time of year.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) says that it is usually inundated with calls from people battling with financial stress over this period.

The group's Dessy Tzoneva adds that too many people overspend and overindulge, which can lead to depression.

"Having debt over this time of the year is actually quite difficult to bear beacuse other people are spending money on gifts, on going away on holiday. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we would need financing to be able to afford to do these things."
