JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) plans to intensify its road safety campaign this weekend.

The RTMC says this year’s festive season campaign is different and hopes it will help decrease road fatalities.

Twenty-three-thousand motorists have already been issued with traffic fines for speeding and another 1,400 arrested for drunken driving since the start of the month.

The RTMC’s Simon Zwane says they hope increasing visibility on the roads will curb fatalities this festive season.

“We will be intensifying these efforts over the Christmas long weekend to ensure that we increase compliance, reduce the number of people who are dying and make sure that this is a safe festive season.”

Zwane says over a 1,600 unroadworthy vehicles have been already been impounded.

He says those found walking while intoxicated will not be spared as pedestrians account for a large number of road deaths.
