Barbara Hogan slams ANCWL’s response to #ANC54’s new leadership

Hogan says Ramaphosa's win at the party’s 54th national conference will help move the country forward.

CAPE TOWN - Former minister Barbara Hogan says having Cyril Ramaphosa as African National Congress (ANC) president is a major positive change for the country and the organisation.

Hogan says Ramaphosa's win at the party’s 54th national conference will help move the country forward.

In response to the ANC Women's League's (ANCWL) criticism of the fact that only one woman was elected to the ANC's top six, Hogan had this to say.

“The Women’s League didn’t vote for Lindiwe Sisulu and they factionalised themselves. The real gender issues that we face in our country, they allowed themselves to be brought in to a particular faction of ANC that is extremely patriarchal.”

WATCH: Dlamini Zuma reduced to being a ‘president’s ex-wife’ - Dlamini

Earlier on Tuesday, ANCWL's President Bathabile Dlamini said the league is not celebrating the outcome of the leadership elections because the ANC has failed the women of South Africa.

Dlamini believes the ANC has regressed in its efforts to empower and elevate women to decision-making positions.

She blamed the outcome on patriarchy in the party, claiming that the sole female on the top six probably would not have made it to that position had she been up against another man.

Jessie Duarte beat Zingiswa Losi for the position of deputy secretary-general.

Dlamini thanked Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma for putting up a good fight, despite being the target of criticism and insults.

The Women’s League leader believes Dlamini Zuma was reduced to being the head of the state’s ex-wife.

The League says it’s not proud of the election results, saying Oliver Tambo must be turning in his grave.
