More than 600 displaced after separate fires in Elsies River, Strand

CAPE TOWN - Over 600 people have been displaced in two separate fires in Elsies River and Strand.

At least 120 residents were left homeless following a blaze in Leonsdale in the early hours of Sunday morning.

City of Cape Town safety and security director Richard Bosman says: “The City’s fire and rescue service responded to a fire in Leonsdale in Elsies River. The report was that there were 18 shacks alight.”

Western Cape housing department officials were on scene to assess the situation.

A fire also displaced around 500 people in Nomzamo. There were no injuries or fatalities.
