Mkhize emphasises importance of having correct credentials at conference
Zweli Mkhize says the registering of delegates has led to a delayed start for today's session.
JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize says a critical issue for the ANC conference will be to ensure all delegates have the correct credentials.
There have been accusations of rigging to inflate the number of delegates at registration points.
Mkhize says the registering of delegates has led to a delayed start for Sunday's session.
“In our case, we’ve had a number of court cases that caused us to be able to look back at the attendance of conference.
“That’s a critical issue as to who is in conference because you must be elected delegates from a properly constituted branch meeting.”
Meanwhile, Mkhize says that his successor will probably be announced by Monday.
Mkhize told members of the Progressive Business Forum that he’s only treasure-general of the party for a few more hours.
Mkhize says the conference has been going well, despite several delays.
“But it’s nothing untoward, those kind of things happen. Once you get past the question of who is here and once that’s been cleared, we’ll then get into the main report.”
Mkhize also made it clear that he may not be here on Monday morning to address business leaders.
“I’ll be the treasurer-general for few remaining hours now and so you’ll have, once announced, maybe tomorrow you’ll a successor who will come in and then continue the work.”
Mkhize says issues around the economy will remain a critical focal point for the incoming leadership especially around policy implementation.
