CAPE TOWN - Police in Worcester are investigating after a woman was seriously wounded in a shooting in Avian Park.

The shooting was reported in Koevoel Street on Tuesday night.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, but Avian Park has seen a spike in gang-related shootings this year.

Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi visited the community about three months ago.

At the time, he said that at least 20 people were killed in gang-related incidents there since the start of this year.

Meanwhile, Mkongi on Wednesday said police would not announce a date for the deployment of SANDF officials to crime-stricken areas in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

“If we’re coming to the Western Cape, we can’t make the announcement, we’ll be giving the criminals a hint. We can’t. We want to find them when they are not prepared.”

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula sent a request to the Defence Minister asking for the deployment of SANDF soldiers amid a rise in gang violence in the two provinces.

The Defence Ministry, however, said a lengthy process must be carried out before the deployment could take place.
