JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa says her department has added hundreds of new ambulances and dozens of new staff members in preparation for the festive season.

Speaking at the province’s Emergency Medical Services head offices in Midrand, she’s given the assurance that her department is ready for the holiday period.

Ramokgopa says 862 ambulances have been added to the Health Department’s fleet, bringing the total number of vehicles to 1,268.

Ramokgopa added the emergency vehicles were procured in two phases since the beginning of this financial year.

“Today we’re also unveiling 164 new ambulances that have been purchased in this financial year."

The festive season is usually marred by road accidents which result in severe injuries.

Added to this is the spike in crimes that also result in injury, leading to an increase in people needing emergency medical care.
